Katherine Hunter is one of the two co-founders of Chimpoulis& Hunter, P.A. She has been practicing law in South Florida since 1993, after graduating from the University of Florida’s Journalism School with a degree in Public Relations and from Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center. Katherine focuses her practice on medical malpractice defense and catastrophic injury matters.

Katherine’s legal career began at the firm Wampler, Buchanan & Breen, P.A. in Miami, where she litigated a variety of cases ranging from family law disputes to federal employment discrimination claims. While at Wampler, Buchanan & Breen, P. A., she worked in the mergers and acquisitions division of the firm, where she conducted due diligence, prepared contracts, and oversaw corporate mergers. Katherine also prepared and argued before the Third District Court of Appeals on behalf of her corporate clients, including the case of Weitzner v. U.S. Precast Corp.

In March of 1996, Katherine joined the firm O’Connor & Meyers, P.A. and began to focus her career on insurance, general liability and medical malpractice defense matters. At O’Connor & Meyers, P.A., she litigated insurance coverage issues in federal and state court and traveled to London to participate in the insurance exchange as part of her representation of London re-insurers Lloyds of London and St. Paul Reinsurance.

In December of 2002, Katherine and Jay Chimpoulis started the firm Chimpoulis & Hunter, P.A. in Fort Lauderdale where she continued to focus her practice on insurance, medical malpractice defense, personal injury and nursing home defense. She practices in both state and federal Court. Her federal court practice includes defending constitutional claims of deliberate indifference brought against private companies providing healthcare services to incarcerated patients. Katherine has participated in every aspect of litigation including mediations, arbitrations, trials and appeals. She is AV rated by her peers.

Katherine is a member of numerous organizations including the Broward Bar Association, Florida Defense Lawyers Association, and the Defense Research Institute. Currently, she has served on the Executive Committee of the Florida Bar’s Trial Lawyers Section where she has helped organize the Florida Trial Lawyers Annual Summit and the Annual Mock Trial Competition. In 2012, she helped develop the “Teacher’s Law School” to provide Florida Social Studies teachers with information and resources for teaching a new Civics curriculum to middle school students throughout Florida. Throughout the years, she has lectured to medical, dental, nursing and pharmaceutical students regarding medical legal issues. Katherine is involved with charitable South Florida organizations focusing on children’s and women’s issues, including the I Care I Cure Foundation, Susan G. Komen Foundation and World Vision.
